Wildcat Heart Day Held in Honor of Michael Halpin
by Kimia Pakdaman
Editor-in-Chief
On March 21, LGHS held its first Wildcat Heart Day in honor of Michael Halpin. Athletes from almost all LGHS sports came to the Community Room on Saturday to get their blood pressure taken, to receive an EKG screening, and to learn to do CPR and to use defibrillators. All of these activities were free due to the Halpin family’s generous donation, and not only help from parent volunteers, but also experts from Good Samaritan Hospital.
From 8 AM to 5 PM, parents and doctors put the athletes through different tests. The day started with a sign-up table in front of the Community Room. Athletes then waited for a volunteer to take their blood pressure. While waiting, students conversed with each other. “It was fun seeing all the girls from the field hockey team,” commented junior Brittany Bersano, “We got to talk with each other while we waited"...(read more)
by Ben Rosenberg The truth is, senioritis is quite possibly the most consistently devastating illness high school students will ever face. Common symptoms include intense laziness and chronic overuse of Facebook. This “sickness” has become a recurring plague for second-semester seniors, and most people just accept that it is an inevitable part of the senior experience. However, as much as I love sitting at home doing nothing, (and believe me when I say I am a helpless victim of senioritis) I can’t help but wonder—are we wasting our time here? The purpose of senior year is, if nothing else, to prepare us for college or work, but senioritis has turned the legend of the useless second semester into a social norm...(read more) Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter may attract movie-goers due to his wide and loyal fan base. However, Depp’s unpredictable and over the top portrayal of the character detracts from the overall magical ambiance. Alice, as played by Mia Wasikowska, delivers a timid, meek, and unconvincing performance. Lacking both the original Alice’s curiosity and politeness, Wasikowska takes a safe and bland approach to such a distinct character. It is a shame to see such characters as the Mad Hatter and Alice have their charm diminished by ill-fitting performances from the actors...(read more)

Finding a Cure for "Senioritis"
Editor-in-Cheif
It’s a Sunday afternoon. I have a biology test to study for, three pages of math homework, and 200 pages of Crime and Punishment to read by the next day. My lack of productivity is palpable. In fact, I have become so lazy that I can’t even work up the moxie to return my e-mails. I just might be “sick.”

Turning 18 Should Come with More Freedoms
by Ben Rosenberg
Editor-in-Chief
When a person turns 18, he or she legally becomes an adult; however, there are some pretty ridiculous strings attached to the title. You can go to jail, but you can’t gamble. You can be drafted into the army, but you can’t rent a car. You can buy cigarettes, but you can’t buy alcohol. These arbitrary rules do not make any sense.
Once you become an adult, you should have all possible freedoms along with all possible punishments. There are no more lines to be drawn, no more distinctions to be made. You can do what you want, and you are old enough to be held accountable for your choices—no strings attached. However, it seems that becoming an adult has more negative attributes than positive ones...(read more)

Helsinki, Finland: The Perfect Tourist Destination
by Sunli Kim
Center Editor
Paris is the most frequently dreamed of travel destination; a center of fashion, a Mecca of enthusiastic epicureans, and a pinnacle of wine, our expectations of the city’s treasures are never disappointed. But one has not truly experienced European culture in its entirety without visiting the lovely city of Helsinki, Finland. With its ancient paved roads and cathedrals, bustling market harbors, quaint café settings, and lively night scene, the city is the epitome of the foreign experience.
The Helsinki port lies on the edge of a picturesque bay often filled with small, brightly colored fishing boats. The daily outside market ends literally a few steps from the water and sells such a variety of unique items and food that when I went two summers ago, I discovered something new each time I rambled among the vendors. The organic produce and fish stands positively glowed with freshness; the strawberries, although tiny, were basically juicy spoonfuls of sugar, and the snap peas were so sweet and fresh that we all bought a bag each to nibble on throughout the day...(read more)

Omri Rahmil
by Isabelle Monahan
World Editor
“Costa Rica! I am going there in the summer for ten days with five of my best friends. Just going to live the dream,” said senior Omri Rahmil when asked about vacation plans. With summer only a few months away, senioritis has started to affect most of the senior population, including Rahmil. He stated, “I never really procrastinated until a few months ago. I have [senioritis] bad now, especially with how the nice weather has been.” However, his mild case of senioritis has not affected his acceptance into excellent universities, including UC Santa Cruz and UC Santa Barbara.
Rahmil spends his free time engaging in his favorite activities, including hiking, camping, surfing, skating, and playing the drums. Furthermore, he was a Freshman Skills Day leader for the weekend scene and participated in varsity wrestling this year....(read more)

Alice in Wonderland is A Must See Movie
by Abbie Carson
News Editor
Where else can one find walking cards, a vanishing cat, and a slew of demented creatures, except for in Tim Burton’s sequel to Alice in Wonderland? The stunning visuals and 3D effects add to the already substantial hype of this film. The general consensus is that the jaw-dropping special effects are not enough to outweigh the flat performances from the main characters and a weak plot line. The movie wildly strays from the plot and essence of the original Alice in Wonderland and the producers may have gotten carried away with special effects while creating the magical wonderland.

A hideous hooked nose is no way to catch the eye of your desired mate (excepting of course if your desired mate is a bird, in which case you have greater problems than physical attractiveness and should really talk to someone qualified to help you)...(read more)
