SafeRides:  Alive and Well

In last month’s issue of El Gato, the article “LG investigates: where is Saferides?” that appeared on page 3 implicated false information. SafeRides has been running on Friday and Saturday nights from 10 PM to 2 AM continuously for the past four years.

Many organizations contribute to the sustaining of SafeRides. For example, the Los Gatos Education and Recreation Department sponsors the program, provides the insurance needed to operate at the Venue and requires a person over 25 to physically be there. Likewise, CASA pays for the 1-800-550-Ride phone number used by SafeRides. Steve and Judy Glickman still greatly contribute to the Los Gatos SafeRide program and will continue to do so until someone else steps up. Judy Glickman, when addressing the Youth Commission on Sep. 9, 2008, asked for a permanent organization to manage the program in duties, such as recruiting and confirming volunteers and locking up the Venue.

Freshmen Carly Haouk, Olivia Meehan, Isabel Chadwick, and Alex Houck participate in SafeRides and have committed the next three years to keeping it alive. Senior Robbie Streeter, as well, has contributed many hours driving students around.

The program is active, and students and parents can still depend on it to provide secure and confidential ways to get home on late weekend nights. The sincerest apology goes out to all of those taking part in this crucial program.
