Led by vocal and musical director Diana Pleasant and director and choreographer Alex Acevedo, the students of LGHS will be presenting the annual spring musical entitled “A Chorus Line” this month.

Based on the classic musical, “A Chorus Line” tells the story of seventeen Broadway gypsies auditioning for spots on the chorus line of a popular Broadway musical.  Desperate for work, every person auditioning must introduce him or herself and reluctantly reveal his or her past to the formidable director Zach, in hopes of becoming part of the dancing chorus of four men and four women.

As the auditions progress, the characters tell their stories to the director, who gradually learns more and more about their early life experiences up until the end of their professional careers. One of the candidates, Sheila, reveals her father’s lack of compassion during her childhood years, which inspired her passion for ballet as an escape from her troubled family life. Another candidate, Bebe, notes that she was also drawn to ballet because as a child, she never felt beautiful.  Ritchie, a third candidate, recalls nearly becoming a kindergarten teacher, and the emotionally charged Paul, who is later called on stage, learns to accept his homosexuality after revealing his early participation in a drag act.

A number of familiar faces from previous years’ musicals, such as  Parissa Koo, Ian McAdams, and Cody Rodes appear throughout the musical as auditioning characters and members of the ensemble.  While the practices leading up to the final performance have proved to be more than physically demanding for the cast members, their positive energy has been phenomenal.  Together, they will sing musical numbers including “What I Did for Love,” and “I Hope I get It.” Senior Lindsay Trone, a member of the ensemble, commented, “When I come out of rehearsal, I find myself completely covered in bruises, yet unable to stop smiling for hours.  It’s hard work, but that’s a part of what makes it so fun and satisfying.”

The final dress rehearsal and preview for the staff and faculty was held on Wednesday, Mar. 3 at 7:00 PM in the Pentis Brown auditorium.  The rest of the performances took place on Mar. 5 and 6, and three more will take place on Mar. 11 at 7:00
PM and Mar. 12 and 13 at 8:00 PM. Those who are interested in attending the play are encouraged to buy tickets in advance, which may be purchased online closer to the time of the event. “A Chorus Line” has been one of the most praised musicals, and will no doubt prove to be a very well performed and highly entertaining extravaganza at LGHS.
